Combat Plastic Consumption with Blem

The spread of plastics can now be witnessed in all corners of the globe. But how can we do our part?

Lessons From School

It was nearing the end of my high school career, exams were rushing towards us, stress levels were sky-high, and time to study was disappearing like a puddle on a 40-degree day. What do you do? It seriously felt as though the task was too big to conquer.

My history teacher felt different. I will always remember what he said to a classroom full of boys searching for a piece of the puzzle to succeed:

“The harder the conflict, the more glorious your triumph will be.”

He was right. We all completed the tests, and the satisfaction of receiving results after working so hard was incredible.

The Plastic Crisis

This is the attitude required to solve the crisis of plastic devastating our planet. The magnitude of the problem is enormous, but with effort, the end result will be spectacular.

Every day, the equivalent of 2,000 garbage trucks of plastic are dumped into oceans, rivers, and lakes.

Annually, 19–23 million tonnes of plastic leak into aquatic ecosystems.

This pollution disrupts marine habitats, harms wildlife, and threatens food security and livelihoods worldwide.

Plastic Pollution

The fashion industry is a major contributor, consuming 342 million barrels of oil each year to produce synthetic fibers such as polyester, nylon, and acrylic — responsible for 73% of microfiber pollution in Arctic waters.

Plastic packaging accounts for 26% of all plastic produced annually, with 72% discarded after a single use. Only 9% of all plastic ever produced has been recycled. Overproduction and overconsumption fuel this crisis.

How We Can Make a Difference

Eliminating all plastic isn’t realistic. But every small choice can gradually reduce our impact.

Start with Fashion

Avoid fast fashion. Trend-driven clothing generates immense plastic waste. Instead, choose:

  • High-quality, long-lasting items
  • Sustainably sourced materials
  • Brands with eco-conscious production, like Blem

Small acts can create a lasting impact. Bring reusable bottles and bags, and skip single-use plastics whenever possible.

The journey to reduce plastic’s harmful effects will be long and challenging. But as my history teacher said, difficult tasks bring the greatest satisfaction.

Take Action. Live Consciously. Protect Our Planet.
